History of the Hidden Lane Landfill

The landfill known as the “Hidden Lane Landfill” AKA “Loudoun Dump” located between Broad Run Farms and Countryside has been an issue for the community of Broad Run Farms for over 40 years. The Property was owned by the Smith & Moran Corporation. After numerous failed attempts to receive a Loudoun County permit to operate a “Stump Dump” they were granted a permit by the State of Virginia against Loudoun Counties objections. The first documented complaints about the operation of the dump started in 1971 and continued until the landfill was closed in the mid 1980’s.  After well water started testing positive for trichloroethylene (TCE) a known carcinogen, County Health Department officials, County Supervisors, the State Health Department and the Federal EPA got involved. Click here for a timeline of events, this time line covers events up to June of 2014. You can also find information on the Superfund listing of the site at the EPA’s web site http://go.usa.gov/KQ3j where you can find multiple documents and Community Updates.
